Marcus Rashford has been assigned the number nine shirt for the upcoming season after rejoining Manchester United this month.
The club officially confirmed the allocation, which has now been registered with the Premier League.
Whether the England international will remain at Old Trafford beyond the current transfer window remains uncertain, though interim manager Michael Carrick has highlighted the forward’s strong training performances since his return.
Rashford featured in the number nine position during his first appearance for the club since December 2024, a pre-season fixture against AC Milan.
The squad number became vacant following Rasmus Hojlund’s move to Napoli.
Hojlund had inherited the shirt after Anthony Martial’s departure in 2024, wearing it for a single full campaign before being replaced by Ruben Amorim’s new system.
Rashford previously occupied the number ten shirt during his initial spell with the club, prior to loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona.
That number is now held by Matheus Cunha.
Several notable forwards have carried the number nine at United, including Andy Cole, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Dimitar Berbatov during the Premier League era, with Sir Bobby Charlton among the earlier wearers of the iconic number.
Carrick noted that Rashford had reintegrated alongside Kobbie Mainoo, with Lisandro Martinez joining the squad shortly afterwards.
The caretaker manager emphasised that the player had applied himself well in training and was considered part of the current group like any other squad member.
