Marcus Rashford has been guiding Manchester United’s rising talent JJ Gabriel since rejoining the club where he grew up.
The 28-year-old forward, who came back to Old Trafford in the summer, has begun offering guidance to the 15-year-old defender as well as fellow youngster Shea Lacey. Sources within the club have apparently noted how impressed officials have been by Rashford’s professionalism and maturity in this mentorship role.
Rashford’s return came amid uncertainty following a strained period, including a falling out with previous head coach Ruben Amorim. However, current manager Michael Carrick has embraced the England international’s comeback.
This nurturing of young players represents an established pattern for Rashford. He was already supporting the development of the club’s aspiring footballers as early as 2020, despite being relatively young himself at that stage.
Having burst onto the scene at Old Trafford aged just 17, Rashford understands precisely what it takes to become a beloved figure at the stadium from a tender age. This experience could prove invaluable in his mentorship of Gabriel and potentially earn him renewed affection from supporters after a challenging chapter in his career.
Barcelona opted against signing Rashford permanently following his productive loan stint at the Camp Nou last term. Carrick has expressed satisfaction with the forward’s application since his return.
The manager acknowledged at a press conference that Rashford had integrated seamlessly with Mainoo and Martinez during training in Dublin, appearing fit, sharp, and prepared to contribute. Rashford has also reconnected swiftly with England colleague Mainoo, with both players facing competition for places in midfield alongside new arrivals Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.
Gabriel would have earned his first senior appearance last season had age not been a barrier, but he now meets the eligibility requirements as his 16th birthday approaches and could feature in the squad for the trip to Hull City on Saturday.
