Manchester United complete £65m signing of midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton

Manchester United finalised the acquisition of midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton on Tuesday, completing a transfer that had been anticipated throughout the summer.

Baleba’s development was shaped by demanding training routines during his childhood in Cameroon, where he would undertake relentless endurance work and speed drills under his father’s guidance near the family home.

Those early sacrifices laid the groundwork for a remarkable ascent through European football.

In just four seasons, the player progressed from the Brasseries du Cameroun Football Academy to French outfit Lille, before joining Brighton and now completing a move to one of the world’s most prominent clubs.

Describing the prospect of gracing Old Trafford in United colours, Baleba indicated it would represent a significant honour.

The circumstances surrounding his arrival at Old Trafford involved a straightforward progression.

United had explored the possibility of securing his signature during the previous close season.

While the player expressed enthusiasm for relocating to Manchester, Brighton maintained a valuation exceeding the £115million sum Chelsea had paid for Moises Caicedo.

Twelve months later, United committed £65million plus an additional £5million in potential add-ons, a figure that has left club executives convinced they secured exceptional value.

Despite a dip in performance levels during the most recent campaign, which head coach Fabian Hurzeler attributed to speculation surrounding his future, United remained undeterred in their pursuit.

The club’s hierarchy retain conviction that the 22-year-old possesses the attributes to develop into one of the Premier League’s most accomplished midfield operators.

Baleba arrived at United carrying an ankle ligament problem, though he successfully completed his medical assessment without complications.

Although the injury is not considered severe, it is anticipated he will remain unavailable until the middle of September.

Administrative matters were responsible for the delay in confirming the transfer.

Permission was granted for him to travel to Manchester on Saturday, where he dined at The Rex Hotel alongside his representative.

In the official transfer announcement, technical director Jason Wilcox described Baleba as an elite operator with substantial scope for further progression.

The signing provides Michael Carrick with a third midfield acquisition during the transfer window, specifically a player offering greater mobility and enhanced shielding for the backline.

United had earlier secured the captures of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans at a combined cost equivalent to Tottenham’s expenditure on Mateus Fernandes, though the final piece of their midfield reconstruction proved both the most significant and most costly.

Baleba’s introduction to English football occurred under Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton, with the Italian coach allowing him time to acclimatise to the rigours of the top flight.

Upon his arrival in 2023, De Zerbi commented that while he might not be prepared for Premier League action immediately, he would develop into a distinguished operator in the division.

The player later acknowledged the former Brighton manager’s contribution during an interview.

Under Hurzeler’s guidance, Brighton achieved an eighth-place league finish, with Baleba playing a pivotal role throughout the campaign.

During that season, he ranked among only two central midfielders to exceed 34 kilometres per hour in speed, while his combined tally of 92 tackles and interceptions placed him joint-sixth among his positional peers.

Observers who tracked his performances could identify a player destined for higher honours, with statistical analysis supporting what was visible on the pitch.

Initial discussions proved prohibitively expensive, yet United revisited interest this summer following Brighton’s willingness to reduce their demands after Baleba’s less productive spell.

Those displays did not diminish United’s belief in his ability, and there exists optimism within the club that he could represent considerable value for the investment.

His skill set encompasses defensive contributions through interceptions, disruption of opposition attacks, and winning physical battles in central areas, while he also demonstrates competence in distributing possession, ticking the essential criteria for a contemporary number six.

While not renowned for scoring, his four goals for Brighton were celebrated with characteristic flair, incorporating backflips into his goal celebrations that supporters at Old Trafford may witness on numerous occasions in the future.

Baleba explained that his fascination with acrobatics had been cultivated with the intention of enhancing his spatial awareness and heading ability.

United simply require the player who appeared destined for the summit several years ago, and the club harbour confidence that this version of the midfielder will materialise.
