Antonio Valencia has spoken about how Steve Bruce influenced him to choose Manchester United over Real Madrid.
The Ecuadorian international, now 41, spent a decade at Old Trafford and captained the side during his final season. Valencia arrived in England in 2006, just three years into his professional career, when he moved to Wigan Athletic on loan from Villarreal.
His temporary spell became a permanent transfer in 2008, and the following summer brought interest from several clubs across Europe. Both Manchester United and Real Madrid were among those keen to sign him.
Valencia has discussed the challenges of relocating globally but expressed his enduring affection for Wigan. He told Ladbrokes that his initial signing at Wigan proved particularly tough due to unfamiliarity with numerous aspects of English life, from the language to cultural differences and cuisine.
The midfielder explained that his time at Wigan, where he was managed by United legend Steve Bruce, proved pivotal in his eventual career path. When he discovered United were interested, he described it as wonderful news for himself and his family. However, he had also received interest from another major English club alongside Real Madrid.
Valencia stated he came extremely close to joining Real Madrid but values listening to advice, crediting Bruce with recommending he sign for United. He considers it the finest decision he could have made.
Wigan holds a special place in his heart as the club that provided the platform for him to eventually play for Manchester United, and he continues to follow their progress. The club added several solid players during the summer transfer window, finishing 16th in the previous campaign, and Valencia hopes they can push for a play-off spot and return to higher divisions.
Valencia secured six major trophies during his time at United, including two Premier League crowns within his first four seasons at the club.
