Manchester United’s Under-21 side secured a comfortable 5-0 victory over Ipswich in their opening Premier League 2 fixture of the campaign on Monday.

Gabriel stood noticeably above his contemporaries at Under-18 level throughout the previous campaign, and he appeared significantly superior once more on Monday evening during his competitive Under-21 debut against Ipswich.

Despite being much smaller in stature than several Ipswich players, his outstanding technical ability enabled him to compete effectively against far more experienced opponents. Michael Carrick and Steve Holland were in attendance, and they would have been pleased with what they observed from the teenager.
Gabriel provided two assists during the opening half against Ipswich. Neither was particularly remarkable, yet there was evident excitement among the small gathering of supporters each time he received possession.
That enthusiasm stems from Gabriel’s reputation already spreading widely. Undoubtedly, some spectators had come to Leigh Sports Village specifically hoping to catch a glimpse of him.
Gabriel was determined not to settle for merely supplying assists on an evening when United were completely dominating an outclassed Ipswich side, and he emerged with renewed purpose in the second half seeking his own goal.
The team led 4-0 at the interval, with Victor Musa, Jack Fletcher, Jayden Kamason and Dan Armer all finding the net, and Gabriel required just six minutes after the restart to join them on the scoresheet, finishing with an elegant lob that dropped beneath the crossbar.
The teenager barely celebrated as his teammates rushed across to congratulate him. He considers spectacular goals his standard, and he will net plenty more if he reaches the levels being predicted for him.
That Gabriel is competing six years above his natural age group speaks volumes about his ability and enormous potential. Carrick had given the forward his first-team opportunity in a pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid, and he was selected for Republic of Ireland training camp when only a handful of other academy players were chosen.
Gabriel is anticipated to make his senior debut this campaign, and displays such as his performance against Ipswich can only strengthen Carrick’s belief that he could make an appearance from the bench for the first-team.
Gabriel had scored several impressive goals for the Under-21s in closed-door practice matches at Carrington during the summer, but his strike against Ipswich marked his first competitive goal at that age level.
United are making every effort to retain Gabriel. Rivals can sign academy players at 14 and 16, meaning he could depart next summer, but United have established a clear progression route.
The club have done and continue to do everything possible to keep Gabriel, including inviting him to the directors’ box at Old Trafford to watch matches with his family, and arranging an introduction to Sir Alex Ferguson.
He received a personal meeting with Ruben Amorim last season. Carrick has awarded him a pre-season opportunity, involved him in senior training sessions, and his presence at the Ipswich match would not have escaped notice.
The only potential issue with Gabriel playing so far above his own age group is the physical dimension. His exceptional skill should ensure he has no difficulties performing at Under-21 level, though this is a more physically demanding age category.
United may need to manage Gabriel’s workload carefully this season as his body continues to mature. After all, he is only 15, a fact that reportedly surprised an Ipswich observer in the press box who had never previously seen him play.
Adam Lawrence also spoke positively about Gabriel throughout the match, commending him as he won possession on the hour mark, indicating his willingness to engage in the less glamorous aspects of the game.
