The Red Devils have officially announced that Rashford will sport the number nine this campaign following his club return.

Whether Rashford will still call Old Trafford home when the transfer window shuts remains uncertain, though Michael Carrick has made clear his admiration for the striker’s efforts since coming back and stated he is currently part of the United roster.

Rashford sported the nine when he featured for United for the first time since late 2024 during a pre-season match against AC Milan at the weekend. The club indicated the number might be temporary, but it has since been registered with the Premier League.

United’s number nine became vacant following Rasmus Hojlund’s move to Napoli. Rashford previously carried the number ten at United prior to temporary spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona, though Matheus Cunha now bears that digits.

Hojlund took over the number nine after Anthony Martial left United in summer 2024. The Danish international only donned the storied shirt for a single complete season before being removed by Ruben Amorim.

Prominent forwards such as Andy Cole, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Dimitar Berbatov have all sported the number nine for United during the Premier League years, with Sir Bobby Charlton among the legends who carried it in earlier times.

Discussing Rashford last week, Carrick stated: He is an exceptionally talented footballer, and if you intend to sustain a career spanning a decade or longer, there will inevitably be periods when circumstances shift in unexpected ways.

There are peaks and valleys, and that does not define someone permanently. What matters is the overall trajectory, and currently we find ourselves in a favourable position as a collective. Marcus possesses tremendous capability. He has demonstrated it previously, and he can do so once more, which makes this situation quite thrilling.

Carrick added: He belongs to us. He rejoined alongside Kobbie Mainoo, with Lisandro Martinez arriving the subsequent day, and he integrates into the squad just like anyone else. He has integrated well and trained exceptionally.

I have known him for considerable time, much like several other players, so I do not handle him any uniquely compared to others, though having him back with the group this week has been wonderful. My outlook remains highly optimistic.

Rashford still has two seasons left on his £325,000 weekly United deal.
