Marcus Rashford looks set to remain at Manchester United for the foreseeable future after spending the previous campaign on loan at the Catalan club
Marcus Rashford has weighed in on Gary Neville’s Manchester United query
The Manchester United forward has backed Jamie Carragher’s stance after Gary Neville persisted in questioning him about the player following his comeback to the club. Neville broached the subject during a recent Stick to Football episode, a line of questioning that seemed to frustrate the ex-Liverpool defender.
Neville posed the question: Marcus Rashford, what do we think? Last question, to which Carragher responded sharply: Oh ***********. Can we do a podcast without mentioning Rashford? Stop it! Oh my god. It’s like the Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and Rashford – there was like a little part of the podcast – the Trent part or the Rashford part.
Neville subsequently transitioned and asked: How is Trent? which prompted Carragher’s weary reply: Oh my God!
Neville attempted to explain, stating: No, but he’s come back to United, though Carragher was having none of it, adding: So what? Oh my God. He’s just a good player for Man United!
Rashford subsequently shared the clip on X, where he appeared to align himself with Carragher’s comments. Thanks, Jamie, he posted. It would be great to be able to get my head down and play football without my name being mentioned every day, accompanied by a crying emoji.
With the Premier League campaign just around the corner, it had appeared probable that Rashford would not be at the club, given how strongly his future seemed to lie elsewhere. Barcelona, where he spent last term on loan, held the option to acquire him permanently for £26million but elected not to trigger it, instead opting for Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United.
Nevertheless, his return to Manchester has been an encouraging one. He pulled on a United shirt for the first time in almost two years when he entered as a substitute in their recent friendly loss to AC Milan. The 28-year-old now appears to be enjoying life back at Old Trafford, serving as a guide to several of the club’s younger players.
Although the summer transfer window remains open until September 1, the chances of Rashford staying at the club are thought to be growing by the day. Michael Carrick has already conducted extensive discussions with the England international, who could prove pivotal for the club this season.
He’s our player, you know, and he’s come back great. He’s just like any other player, Carrick commented. I’ve known Marcus a long time and, you know, he gives us something a little bit different. And he’s been in great spirits since he’s been back.
He’s been back two or three days training and it’s just pretty normal, to be honest. And we’re looking forward to the start of the season.
But until the summer window shuts, speculation regarding his future will persist, even though the forward’s recent remarks indicate he is concentrating on the season ahead and simply eager to play football. He has not featured in a Premier League encounter since December 2024.
Last term, Rashford’s impressive displays secured him a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the recent World Cup. During his stint at the Camp Nou, he managed 14 goals and 14 assists across 49 appearances and his efforts helped secure La Liga – the first league title of his career.
Carrick’s team will kick off their season away at newly-promoted Hull City on Saturday, August 22 (12:30pm BST).
